The Freedom of Insignificance
Nihilism posits that nothing matters. Nothing.
That includes the mundane things. The things that matter to you. The buildings you take for granted - that you pass by everyday - and the inherit way that you exist.
Some people view this as complete pessimism, with no possible positives. How can anybody live a fulfilling life if they don't think anything matters?
I think otherwise.
Nihilism is the understanding of our place and worth within the greater universe. We aren't necessarily worthless - of course not. But our experiences are quite negligable in the big grand scheme of, uh... Everything.
What I get upset about during my personal Monday morning experience is nothing compared to the extinction of dinosaurs that may have happened on a Monday morning, or the distant creation of a pulsating quasar - perhaps also on a Monday morning.
So maybe it's not so bad if I accidentally hit my head against a bus handrailing, or if I have to call out sick from work because my stomach has decided everything needs to be emptied from itself.
My pain is temporary, and my productivity isn't the most important thing in the universe...
So maybe it's okay that it only matters strictly to myself and no one else on this planet Earth. I can choose if I care or not, but on a fundamental, objective level...
It doesn't really matter.
How freeing.
